My walks buddy Jane and I did this circular trip on Tuesday 17th June 2025. We used the Traveline website to plan the trains and buses https://www.traveline.cymru/ (We used this website throughout our Wales Coast Path walks and found it invaluable).
We used our bus passes, except for the train to Barmouth.
Here’s our itinerary…
Conwy Valley railway, Tal y Cafn at 07:38 to Blaenau Ffestiniog, arriving at 08.34. (This train also stops at Llandudno Junction).
Ten minute walk down High Street to bus stop at Lord Street corner, T22 bus at 09:16 to Penrhyndeudraeth, arriving at Market Square at 09.40.
Three minute walk to train station. Train at 10.05 to Barmouth, arriving at 10:56. £8.50 per person.
We had only 1½ hours in Barmouth. Later return connections are available.
Returning…
T3 bus from Jubilee Rd, Barmouth at 12:33 to Corwen Car Park, arriving at 13:56.
T10 Bus at 14.15 to Betws y Coed railway station, arriving at 14:58.
Three-minute walk to train station. Note: only six minutes transfer time!
Train to Tal y Cafn at 15.06 arriving at 15:27.
Points of interest…
Tal y Cafn to Blaenau Ffestiniog
Views of Afon Conwy and Carneddau mountains, Moel Siabod and Dolwyddelen Castle.
Blaenau Ffestiniog
Information boards at Lord St bus stop with old pictures and slate mural.
Penrhyndeudraeth to Barmouth
Stunning coastal journey, views of Portmeirion, Harlech Castle.
Barmouth
Free guide book available at the railway station.
Attractive seaside town, lifeboat station, iconic bridge over the Mawddach estuary, Market on Thursdays, plenty of places to eat, popular fish and chip shop opposite the bus stop.
Barmouth to Corwen
Bus goes through Dolgellau and Bala with views of Llyn Tegid, and passes Rhug Organic Farm Shop.
Yum Yum’s Cafe in Corwen sells delicious Marshfield’s blackcurrant and clotted cream ice cream.
A well recommended day out. All of the connections worked well!
