Good News Message and pic from Mark Crane,
Hi Peter – In these troubled times, a nice photo of the Dipper in the Afon Ro this morning. There is a pair which are very active at the moment. We watch them going in and out of the nest box under the Ty Pandy bridge. They used to nest in the bridge girders, but the nest was frequently attacked by predators – probably mink. The bridge has recently been modified and refurbished, and the underneath is now completely smooth, which is totally predator proof. I fixed the rather posh, bespoke box below the bridge. The dippers seem very pleased with their new accommodation, and last summer produced a goodly clutch of young dippers that fledged. There are several dipper nests up and down the Afon Ro, which indicates a very healthy river with plenty of food available. They feed mainly on small crustaceans etc in the river.
